Freelancing in Spain: your first 30 days

Quick answer

Start by checking your right to work and registration, then organise your invoices, expenses and tax calendar with these seven steps.

Starting as a freelancer in Spain? Follow a practical reading order from preparing your registration to organising your first tax quarter. Where a detailed guide is only available in Spanish, the link says so.

Free autónomo registration, no subscription required

For standard individual registrations in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, excluding the Basque Country and Navarre. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are not covered. If your situation is unusual, we review your case first.

What should you sort out in your first month?

  1. Check your right to work

If you are moving to Spain, check which residence and work arrangements apply to you before planning your freelance start. Check residence permission and self-employed registration.

  2. Get ready for the online forms

Prepare an accepted way to identify yourself online, or confirm who will submit the registration on your behalf. Prepare your digital certificate (guide in Spanish).

  3. Prepare your registration

Use the registration checklist to prepare your activity details, start date and Social Security contribution forecast. Follow the autónomo registration guide.

  4. Set up your first invoice

Check your first invoice’s details, numbering and tax treatment before sending it to a client. Prepare your first invoice (guide in Spanish).

  5. Check your overseas clients

If you have clients in another European Union country, check the invoicing requirements for your specific transaction. Check invoicing for clients in other European Union countries.

  6. Organise your expenses

Keep your business invoices and receipts together so you can review which expenses belong in your accounts. Review business expenses (guide in Spanish).

  7. Plan your first tax quarter

Identify the tax returns and deadlines that apply to your activity so you can prepare before the quarter closes. Plan your quarterly returns (guide in Spanish).

Use this as a reading order, rather than waiting until day 30 to register or check a deadline; if you have already started, begin with the registration guide.

What if you need advice about your move or your taxes?

If you are considering special tax treatment after moving to Spain, read the guide to the Beckham tax regime before assuming it applies to your situation.
